We recently upgraded (or at least I thought we did)our MySQL server from a PowerEdge 2950 and Intel Xeon Quad-Core X3353 to a PowerEdge R610 and 2x Quad Core Xeon E5520 – both with 12GB of RAM.

We also upgraded the drives from 2x 300GB 10k RPM VelociRaptor to 2x 147GB SAS 15K (running with Raid 1 on both servers)

Our administrator swears that all configuration / versions / setting are the same. Unfortunately prior to going live we conducted some benchmark tests and we see no performance increase at all and with many cases we have seen queries up to 50% slower.

Is there anything obvious I can ask my team to look into or was my expectation for a noticeable improvement unreasonable? Assuming like 4 like what should I expect.

Having selected the hardware I am under pressure to explain to my manager what is going on and with me being the new kid on the block no one is questioning our DBA’s statement that the installation is exactly the same on both the old and new server.
